How does online notary work in North Carolina?
For notaries public appointed by North Carolina, remote online notarization is currently not permitted. However, North Carolina recognizes online notarizations performed by notaries commissioned in other states.
If you wish to make your life easier by taking advantage of the security, convenience, and quick turnaround by hiring a remote online notary, you first need to decide on a RON platform, such as PandaDoc Notary, which you will use to virtually connect with an online notary via a two-way audio-visual connection.
All signers are required to be present at the time the document is to be signed. This means that all signing parties will need access to a computer with a secure internet connection, a webcam, and a microphone to appear before the notary in real time.
Before any signers can apply their signatures to the document, they will be required to verify their identity for the notary. This can be done by producing one of several different methods for ID verification, including the following.
- The notary personally knows the signer and can confirm their identity.
- Presenting a government-issued ID.
- Using knowledge-based authentication (KBA) to verify the signer’s identity.
Once the identities have been verified, the document is eSigned. The online notary will then apply their own digital seal and signature. This digital seal contains encrypted, tamper-proof information that confirms the notary’s commission and ensures the document will be accepted as legally valid.
Once a document has been notarized online, RON law requires that the electronic journal and recording must be kept securely stored and accessible from the date the notarization was completed.
